Sodium iodide is an inorganic compound, chemical formula NaI, molecular weight 149.89, colorless cubic crystal or white granular matter, is a white solid generated by the reaction of sodium carbonate  with hydroiodic acid, and then evaporation of the solution, with or without water, dihydrate and pentahydrate. It is used as a raw material for iodine production in medicine and photography. The acidic solution of sodium iodide shows reducibility due to the formation of hydroiodic acid, tastes salty and slightly bitter, can dissolve in glycerol, and has strong hygroscopic property. In the air gradually hygroscopic to the water content of 5%, can be released by air oxidation of iodine and brown, the aqueous solution is slightly alkaline, also has the same change, can be slightly added alkali to maintain stability. The pH of aqueous solution is 8 ~ 9.5. Should be kept away from light.
